Adult diet instructions the night before surgery

Eat a light supper about 6 o’clock. Examples include soup and sandwich, chicken breast with pasta or potatoes. Avoid anything high fat or fried.

After this, drink only clear liquids until midnight. (A clear liquid is anything that is liquid at room temperature, and you can see through it.)
This includes:

  • Water
  • Popsicles
  • Soft drinks like Sprite, Coke, Diet Coke
  • Kool-aid
  • Tea or coffee without cream or milk
  • Juice: apple juice, grape juice or cranberry juice, but no juice with pulp (orange juice)

Milk and alcohol beverages are not considered clear liquids and should not be consumed after 6 p.m. the night before your procedure. Do not consume gum, hard candy, or smokeless tobacco on the night prior to your surgery.


Pediatric Diet Instructions

Your baby can have formula or breast milk until midnight the night before surgery.  After midnight, they may have clear liquids until 2 am.

  • Water
  •  Juice
  •  Koolaid
  •  Soft drinks such as Sprite.

After 2 am, your baby should not have anything else to eat drink before their surgery.  No water or juice, etc. No candy or gum after midnight.  Parents are encouraged to bring their child’s favorite sippy cup to the hospital, prior to the surgery.
