Quality Measures

P & S Surgical Hospital and its staff are devoted to delivering health care of the highest quality. In an effort to do that, there are quality improvement measures undertaken in every department. Whether the staff is determining how to improve the registration process or how to improve communication between the operating room and family members, quality is the focus of our hospital. Here are a few of our ongoing quality performance-monitoring projects.

SCIP

The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national quality partnership of organizations committed to improving the safety of surgical care through the reduction of postoperative complications. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to save lives by reducing the incidence of surgical complications by 25% by the year 2010.

Our staff monitors the delivery and timing of perioperative antibiotics, the temperature of patients during surgery, and the prevention of deep-vein thrombosis, as an example of some SCIP measures. All of the statistics for these and other measures are reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) so that we can be compared to other facilities nationwide that participate in the project. P & S Surgical Hospital consistently scores higher than the state and national averages for surgical care quality. Please visit www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov to see how P & S compares to its peers.

INFECTION CONTROL

Because there is always a risk of infection when a patient has surgery, our staff is committed to reducing that risk as much as possible. We have an infection control manager who monitors postoperative infections and provides training to the staff to improve processes when necessary. Our infection control manager is trained according to APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) guidelines and stays informed of standards for the prevention of postoperative infections. As a result, the postoperative infection rate for P & S Surgical Hospital averages an extremely low 0.0019%.

PATIENT SATISFACTION

Because we pride ourselves on being patient-focused, we take the opinions of our patients very seriously. Consequently, we contract with Press Ganey & Associates to conduct our patient satisfaction surveys. Each patient who has a procedure done here receives a patient satisfaction survey in the mail and returns it directly to Press Ganey. All of the surveys are collected, and patient satisfaction scores are given for the hospital as a whole, each individual department and each specialty. This patient input is then used to improve processes within the facility. Our outpatient satisfaction score is consistently above 90%, and we are continuously working to get it even higher. The patient satisfaction score for our inpatients is 99%. Taking that score a little further, we rank in the top 1% of surgical hospitals both regionally and nationally for inpatient satisfaction, and that is a ranking that we plan to maintain.
